How to Play Pickleball

New to pickleball? It’s easy to pick up and fun from your first game. Here’s what to know before you jump in:

The Basics

Serve underhand, diagonally across the court
After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side
After that, you can volley or let it bounce

The One Rule Everyone Forgets

No volleys in the “kitchen” (the non-volley zone by the net)

Scoring (Quick Version)

Only the serving team scores
Games are typically played to 11, win by 2

At least one pickleball court is typically set up and ready for play
Courts are free to use and do not require reservations
Courts may be unavailable during events in the Alley

Equipment

Paddles and balls are available on most days when courts are set up
Please treat all equipment with care and return it after use
Equipment must stay within Citizens Alley

Looking to cool off? Citizens Alley’s pop-jet fountains offer a free, interactive way to beat the heat. Step in, press the button, and enjoy a playful splash right in the middle of downtown.

Before You Go

A few quick guidelines to keep the fountains safe and fun for everyone:

Good To Know

No lifeguard on duty, play at your own risk
Do not drink the water
No running or rough play
Children must be supervised at all times
Do not activate fountains during severe weather
In case of emergency, call 911

Shoot hoops in downtown Minot anytime at Citizens Alley’s public basketball court. Thanks to Verendrye Electric for donating the hoop, this is your open invitation to play—right in the heart of downtown.

How It Works

It’s simple. The basketball hoop is set up at the east entrance of Citizens Alley and is open for public use most of the time. Bring a ball, bring a few friends, and jump into a quick game of P.I.G. or take your best shot.

No reservation needed. Just show up and play.
Use at your own risk.
Citizens Alley is not responsible for injuries.
Please bring your own basketball.
No hanging on the rim.
